NEA Grant Will Fund Outdoor Sculpture in Waco

The National Endowment for the Arts just announced the Waco Cultural Arts Fest in Waco, Texas is the recipient of a $25,000 grant to support the installation of site-specific outdoor sculptures by Patrick Dougherty. The artist will work with community volunteers for a month-long residency. The result will be three works of woven and twisted tree saplings along a five mile stretch of the Brazos River that includes downtown Waco, Baylor University and the neighborhood of Cameron Park.

Once completed, the project will provide a beautiful outdoor art experience for residents of Waco, as well as visitors to the community. Located on Hwy. IH-35 between Austin and Dallas, Waco is an easily accessible destination for cultural tourists. Other area attractions include the Waco Symphony, Art Center Waco, Hippodrome Theater, Bosque River Stage, Dr Pepper Museum, Martin Museum of Art at Baylor University, and the Waco Civic Theatre.

You can round out a visit to Waco with some of their other offerings including the Waco Suspension Bridge and Riverwalk, TCV Winery, Texas Ranger Museum and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame. On Dec. 5th, the Waco Mammoth Site opened to the public. The Waco Mammoth Site sits in a 100-plus acre stretch of wooded parkland along the Bosque River and is the largest known concentration of prehistoric mammoths dying from the same event.
